Zelfs het toonaangevende Consequence of Sound weet: zodra Meskerem Mees (22) begint te zingen, gebeurt er iets magisch. Met enkel haar stem, akoestische gitaar en de cello van sister in arms Febe Lazou laat ze een song openbloeien tot een onweerstaanbare folkpopparel.

Met droomdebuut ‘Joe’ gooide ze meteen hoge ogen in binnen- en buitenland, opvolgers ‘Seasons Shift’ en ‘Astronaut’ bevestigden haar status van toptalent. Een status die haar al op mooie plekken in Europa bracht, met stops in Berlijn, Parijs en – als kers op de taart – het prestigieuze Montreux Jazz Festival aan het meer van Genève.

En nu is er ‘Julius’, een debuutalbum om bijzonder trots op te zijn. Een klasbak als Koen Gisen weet perfect wat hij daarmee moet doen: niet te veel. Less is more. Zijn spaarzame en immer superbe productie richt de spotlights precies daar waar het moet: op de ontwapenende teksten van Meskerem en het virtuoze muzikale samenspel met Febe.

De optelsom maakt van ‘Julius’ niet minder dan een instant klassieker. Een die alles in huis heeft om te doen waar een illustere naamgenoot eeuwen geleden bijna in slaagde: heel Europa veroveren. En wie weet de wereld.

Même Consequence of Sound, la référence en la matière, le sait : dès que Meskerem Mees (22 ans) commence à chanter, la magie opère. Rien qu'avec sa voix, sa guitare acoustique et le violoncelle de sa soeur d'armes Febe Lazou, elle nous livre une chanson qui se révèle être un petit bijou de folk-pop irrésistible.

Avec son fantastique premier titre, ‘Joe’, elle s'est fait remarquer tant en Belgique qu'à l'étranger et les morceaux qui ont suivi, ‘Seasons Shift’ et ‘Astronaut’, ont confirmé son statut d'artiste talentueuse. Un pro tel que Koen Gisen sait exactement quoi faire : éviter d'en faire trop. Less is more. Sa production à la fois dépouillée et superbe braque les projecteurs là où il faut : sur les textes désarmants de Meskerem et l'accompagnement musical époustouflant avec Febe.

Tous ces éléments conjugués font de ‘Julius’ un classique instantané, qui a tout ce qu'il faut pour faire ce que son illustre homonyme a presque réussi à faire il y a des siècles : conquérir toute l'Europe. Et pourquoi pas le monde.

Debut single ‘Joe’ was a big commercial and critical success in Belgium and its neighbouring countries, follow-up singles ‘Seasons Shift’ and ‘Astronaut’ confirmed her status as one of Europe’s biggest talents in music. A status that brought her to some of the most beautiful places in Europe, from Berlin to Paris, and to top it off the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival on the shoreline of Lake Geneva.
