CALICOS

2024 gaat vooruit en dat vindt het Antwerpse zestal van Calicos niet erg.
Tegen het einde van het jaar verschijnt hun langverwachte tweede album,
en die gaan ze promoten met een niet te missen tour door België en
Nederland.

Met de hoofdvogel van de Rock Rally 2018 op zak nam Calicos de tijd om aan
een debuutplaat te werken. The Soft Landing arriveerde in volle
coronaperiode (mei 2021) en bewees dat de indie americana van de band
zijn plek had in het Belgische muzieklandschap. Kenners prezen de plaat de
hemel in en single Nova werd zelfs een dikke alternatieve hit, met onder
meer 3 weken op 1 in Vox op Radio 1. Live staat de band als een huis, dankzij
het uitmuntende samenspel van zes vaklui en het hemelse stemgeluid van
frontman Quinten Vermaelen. Nederland gaat ook overstag, en eind vorig
jaar verzorgden ze het voorprogramma van The Haunted Youth, onder meer
in een uitverkochte Paradiso (Amsterdam) en Vera (Groningen).

De sound van de band mag door de jaren heen wat opgeschoven zijn naar de
pure indie van een Sharon Van Etten of Kurt Vile, de americana en folk rock
van de beginjaren zit nog stevig in hun DNA. Comedown, Reliving en The
Siren zijn stuk voor stuk sprankelende singles die het de afgelopen maanden
uitstekend deden op radio en streaming. In de laatste rechte lijn naar hun
nieuwe album, dat op 22 november uitkomt, is het bestbewaarde
indiegeheim van de Lage Landen klaar om helemaal door te breken.

The Soft Landing est arrivé en plein cœur de la pandémie (mai 2021) et a prouvé que l'Americana indépendante du groupe avait sa place dans le paysage musical belge. Les critiques ont encensé l'album et le single "Nova" est même devenu un succès alternatif majeur, passant 3 semaines en tête des charts de Vox sur Radio 1. En concert, le groupe est solide comme un roc, grâce à l'excellente collaboration de six artisans qualifiés et à la voix céleste du leader Quinten Vermaelen. Les Pays-Bas ont également été séduits, et l'année dernière, ils ont assuré la première partie de The Haunted Youth, notamment dans un Paradiso (Amsterdam) et un Vera (Groningen) complets.

Bien que le son du groupe ait peut-être évolué au fil des ans vers l'indie pure de Sharon Van Etten ou de Kurt Vile, l'Americana et le folk rock des premières années restent profondément ancrés dans leur ADN. "Comedown", "Reliving" et "The Siren" sont autant de singles étincelants qui ont excellé à la radio et sur les plateformes de streaming ces derniers mois. À l'approche de la sortie de leur nouvel album, prévue pour le 22 novembre, le meilleur secret indie des Pays-Bas est prêt à percer complètement.
