TRIGGERFINGER

Toen in 2019 de tournee naar aanleiding van de twintigste verjaardag van Triggerfinger eindigde, waren Ruben, Mario en Mr. Paul van plan om twee jaar vakantie te nemen van de band. Dat draaide enigszins anders uit. Keizerin Corona gooide danig wat roet in het eten, en Mr. Paul besloot dat het genoeg geweest was. Dat Ruben en Mario geen seconde hebben getwijfeld om, hoewel geamputeerd van een steunbeen, verder te gaan, toont aan dat ze uit een zeldzaam, weerbarstig, veerkrachtig, maar vooral onverwoestbaar hout gesneden zijn.

Het is de honger naar opnieuw samen te kunnen spelen, waarbij na de eerste twee maten de ontegensprekelijke magie verschijnt die een ‘klik’ veroorzaakt, een verbond van gelijkgestemde gitaren, het is de hunkering naar het podium – Triggerfinger heeft daar zijn naam en reputatie opgebouwd –, naar het contact en de liefde van het publiek, die ervoor zorgt dat as we speak een nieuwe weg wordt ingeslagen. Daar horen een nieuwe single bij, uiteraard een tournee, en ja natuurlijk, een nieuw album.

Voor die nieuwe plaat trokken Ruben en Mario naar Los Angeles waar Mitchell Froom hen verwelkomde. Geen onbekende. Froom is nadrukkelijk aanwezig, schreef mee en daagde Ruben en Mario uit, prikkelde hen om andere wegen in te slaan, andere manieren te zoeken, zonder een vast idee te hebben wat het uiteindelijke resultaat precies zou zijn. En dat is precies het fantastische aan het resultaat.

De fellas hebben een muzikale loopbaan die de twintig jaar ver overstijgt. Net zoals ze vandaag anders naar muziek luisteren, zijn het andere muzikanten geworden, geëvolueerd, gegroeid, verrijkt door de jaren. Net zoals het andere mensen zijn geworden. Al zijn ze nog steeds niet volwassen. Hun enthousiasme en energie zijn die van een bende negentienjarigen die vol goesting en ambitie voor het eerst het podium van het jeugdhuis bestormen.

Maar ook bij ervaren rotten van negentien pompt de adrenaline door de aderen, grijpt de nervositeit voor het nieuwe naar de keel, zet de spanning van de uitdaging alles op scherp. Toch is er de zelfzekerheid en het geloof in dat ongrijpbare, onbeschrijfbare fenomeen dat rock-‘n-roll heet. En er is de honger. Er is altijd de honger.

Lorsque la tournée des 20 ans de Triggerfinger s’achève en 2019, Ruben, Mario et M. Paul ont prévu de prendre deux ans de vacances. Les choses vont pourtant se dérouler autrement. Le Covid et sa pandémie passent tout d’abord par là. Ensuite, c’est M. Paul qui décide de raccrocher sa basse. Ruben et Mario n'hésitent alors pas une seconde : ils vont continuer, bien qu'amputés d'une véritable jambe d'appui. Voilà qui montre à quel point ils sont taillés dans un bois rare, frondeur, résistant, mais avant tout indestructible.

A l’heure qu’il est, c'est la faim de pouvoir à nouveau jouer ensemble, avec cette magie indéniable qui survient dès les deux premières mesures et qui crée ce « clic », une alliance de guitares au diapason, c'est l’envie de scène - Triggerfinger y a établi son nom et construit sa réputation -, au contact du public et de l’amour qu’il donne, qui fait que les deux comparses se sont engagés dans une nouvelle voie. Tout ceci étant concrétisé par un nouveau single, une tournée évidemment, et oui, bien sûr, un nouvel album.

Pour les besoins de ce même nouveau nouvel, Ruben et Mario se sont rendus à Los Angeles où ils ont été accueillis par Mitchell Froom, qui n'est plus un inconnu. Sa présence est indéniable : il a coécrit, puis mis Ruben et Mario au défi, les poussant à emprunter différentes directions, à trouver différentes voies, sans avoir d'idée définitive quant au résultat final. Et c'est précisément ce que le résultat a de fantastique !

Les « mecs» affichent une carrière musicale de plus de 20 ans. Tout comme ils écoutent la musique autrement aujourd'hui, ils sont devenus des musiciens différents, qui ont évolué, grandi et se sont enrichis au fil des ans. Tout comme ils sont devenus des personnes différentes. Même s'ils sont encore immatures. Leur enthousiasme et leur énergie sont ceux d'une bande de gamins de dix-neuf ans qui prennent d'assaut la scène de la maison des jeunes pour la première fois, pleins d'ardeur et d'ambition.

Mais l’adrénaline coule aussi dans les veines des pros de 19 ans pétris d’expérience. Pour eux également, la nouveauté rend nerveux, prend à la gorge, et l'excitation du défi met tout à vif. Pourtant, il y a la confiance en soi et la foi en ce phénomène insaisissable et indescriptible qu'est le rock'n'roll. Et il y a la faim. Il y a toujours la faim.

Throwback to September 2019: Triggerfinger’s “Colossus”- album tour came to an end, and the three band members decided it was time for a sabbatical, after 20 years of relentless touring.

Enter: Empress Corona throwing a spanner in the wheels and Monsieur Paul calling it quits & hanging up his bassguitar.
And now, there is the Hunger. Again. Hunger to be on stage, to play music together. Hunger to feel those first two chords hitting the right notes, and feel the magic that appears, the magic that makes 3 individuals melt together and become one. A union of likeminded spirits, a craving to perform - Triggerfinger built their name & reputation on stage - and the yearning for the love of a live audience, the yearning that pushes the creative forces to reinvent themselves, to explore new horizons. This craving resulted in a new single, and - obviously - a tour and, of course, a new album.

Ruben & Mario headed out to Los Angeles once again, where Mitchell Froom gave them a warm welcome. Froom is not exactly unknown to the Triggerfingers. On the new recordings he is explicitly present, as he delivered a fair amount of input in the songwriting, and incited both Mario & Ruben to look beyond their comfort zone, find alternative ways of composing and head out into the unknown without having a clear view on what the eventual result could become. And that is precisely the wonderful thing about these new recordings.

These fellas have had a musical career for more than 20 years now. They have changed, in the way they listen to music, in the way they are as a musician. They’ve grown, evolved, grown towards each other, matured over the years. Just like they’ve become different humans over that period of time - even though there’s still a mild refusal to become your average adult. The energy & enthusiasm of these two is still very much like that of a bunch of 19 year olds taking the stage of their local pub with a cocky feeling of unvincible ambition.

That being said - whether we’re talking about experienced gentlemen or 19-year olds ready to devour life - adrenaline still kicks in when the curtain calls and tension rises when the challenge tickles the senses to - yet again - get up on that stage and face that crowd, conquer their souls with an intense evening of rock-’n-roll. And there’s the Hunger. Always the Hunger.
