SARAH FERRI

Recent lanceerde Sarah Ferri de eerste single van haar gloednieuwe album Displeasure. Eindelijk een vervolg op haar warm onthaalde debuut “Ferritales” gekend van de singles “On my Own”, “Dancing at the Supermarket” en “Were you there”. Dat Sarah Ferri verrassend uit de hoek kan komen, wisten we al. Maar met haar nieuwe single “When The Giants Play Poker” gooit ze toch wel een bommetje. Na de zonnige gipsy swing van “Ferritales” zou niemand zich verwachten aan beukend slagwerk, donkere bassynths, sexy gebas en funky retro gitaartjes. Toch blijft Sarah, met een sterke stem voorop, in haar filmische retro sfeer. De song doet soms denken aan “Knight Rider” of “Running Up That Hill” van Kate Bush. De inspiratie voor nieuwe plaat “Displeasure” kwam dit keer uit een donkere hoek waarvoor Sarah haar lage, melancholische stem bovenhaalde. Voor de nieuwe filmische songs componeerde Ferri weelderige orkestraties met strijkers, pauken en koortjes. Haar inspiratie haalde ze bij haar grote voorbeelden Ray Ellis, George Gershwin, Ennio Morricone, Piero Umiliani, Louis Bacalov en James Newton Howard. Net zoals bij de vorige plaat heeft klankmagiër Koen Gisen de productie op zich genomen. Frederik Dejongh deed de mastering. Displeasure verschijnt in de BENELUX & GAS op 23 september 2016.

Sarah a grandi dans un douillet nid belgo-italien. Fascinée par le style unique de chanteuses vocalistes comme Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday et Nina Simone, elle se mit à écrire des chansons très personnelles et créatives. Leur caractère sombre et féérique fut petit à petit influencé par le réalisme cru du folk dans années septante et par les airs ensoleillés du gipsy jazz swing des années cinquante. Sarah attira l’attention pour la première fois lorsqu’elle remporta le concours « Jeunes loups » (Jonge Wolven) lors des fêtes gantoises en 2008. Ensuite, lors d’un concert au The Music Village, Sarah Ferri fut remarquée par l’Ancienne Belgique et fut engagée dans le projet Artist in Residence. Sarah assura aussi quelques “supports” pour Michael Kiwanuka, Caro Emerald, Simply Red, Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. En 2012 sortit son premier album "Ferritales" chez Universal Music. L’album est produit par Koen Gisen et masterisé par Tim Young dans le Studio Metropolis de Londres. Après un chaleureux accueil de son premier single "On my own" suivirent encore "The man who was bored”, "Dancing at the supermarket" et “Were you there”.
En décembre 2012 elle a reçu une nomination aux Music Industry Awards (MIA's), catégorie "femme solo". Entre 2012 et 2015 suivit une très longue série de concerts tant chez nous qu’à l’étranger. Après Eurosonic et Reeperbahn l’album est aussi sorti aux Pays-Bas et en Allemagne/Autriche/Suisse. Entretemps, Sarah avait commencé à travailler à son prochain album. “Displeasure” sortira le 23 septembre 2016 dans le Benelux et en Allemagne/Autriche/Suisse. Le disque contraste avec le swing jazz ensoleillé de son premier album. L’inspiration en est sombre et mélancolique, ce qui permet à Sarah de jouer de son registre vocal plutôt grave. Les chansons se déroulent dans un décor de cinéma. En s’aidant d’un petit midi-clavier, elle a composé de somptueuses orchestrations avec cordes frottées, timbales et choeurs. Elle est par exemple allée chercher ses influences chez Ennio Morricone, Louis Bacalov, George Gershwin, Ray Ellis et James Newton Howard. Les chansons elles-mêmes sont une fusion entre piano pop, R&B et soul-jazz des années ’60-’70. On flirte aussi pas mal avec l’électronique subtile des beats des années ’80. Koen Gisen est à nouveau aux commandes comme producteur et Frederik Dejongh s’est occupé du mastering.

Sarah grew up in a warm Belgian-Italian nest. She was fascinated by the unique vocal style of such songbirds as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, and started writing highly individual and creative songs of her own. Their dark, fairytale tone was gradually influenced by the stark honesty of seventies folk and the sunny gipsy swing of the fifties. Sarah was first caught on the radar when she won the Young Wolves music contest during the Ghent Festival in 2008. During a concert at The Music Village, Sarah Ferri was noticed by a scout from the Ancienne Belgique and was invited to take part in the Artist in Residence project. Sarah has been the support act for Michael Kiwanuka, Caro Emerald, Simply Red and Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. In 2012 her debut CD, ‘Ferritales’, came out. It was produced by Koen Gisen and mastered by Tim Young at the Metropolis studio in London. Her first single, ‘On My Own’ was enthusiastically received and was followed by ‘The Man Who Was Bored’, ‘Dancing at the Supermarket’ and ‘Were You There?’. In December 2012 she was nominated in the ‘Solo Female Artist’ category at the MIAs. This was followed by extensive touring in Belgium and abroad from 2012 to 2015. After appearances at the Eurosonic and Reeperbahn festivals, the album was also issued in the Netherlands and GAS (Germany/Austria/Switzerland). In the meantime Sarah started work on her next album. “Displeasure” will be issued in the BENELUX & GAS on 23 September 2016. It is in sharp contrast to the sunny swinging jazz of the first album. Her inspiration came from a darker, more melancholy world, for which Sarah put her lower vocal register to good use. The songs are set against a film-like backdrop. Using a midi keyboard, she composed opulent orchestrations with strings, tympani and choruses. This approach shows the influence of Ennio Morricone, Louis Bacalov, George Gershwin, Ray Ellis and James Newton Howard. The songs themselves are a fusion of piano pop, R&B and the soul jazz of the 1960s and ‘70s. There is also some light flirting with subtle electronics and beats from the 1980s. Koen Gisen was once again asked to produce and Frederik Dejongh did the mastering.
