De in Antwerpen gevestigde multidisciplinaire kunstenaar Youniss Ahamad werkt als een kwantumdeeltje, dat zich voortdurend verzet tegen categorisering en kenbaarheid. Zijn liveoptredens op festivals als Rewire, Roadburn en Les Nuits Botanique hebben hem bekendheid gegeven als een muzikale vuurvreter die postpunk, hiphop en noise mixt. Ahamads unieke pad in de Belgische underground is beïnvloed door zijn voorouderlijke roots in Ivoorkust en Irak. Zijn ervaringen als zwarte jongen met een Arabische naam die opgroeide in de buitenwijken van Antwerpen inspireerden hem tot White Space uit 2023, waarmee hij een verschuiving maakte van cerebrale dansmuziek naar vervormde, experimentele storytelling.

Op elk volgend album heeft Ahamad zijn geluid veranderd. Toch is de algemene trend in de richting van meer live, viscerale optredens gegaan: White Space was een uitbarsting van elektrische gitaar, spitfire-zang en scherpe breakbeats. De EP Do We Try Beyond The Edge? uit 2024 ging verder in deze stijl en verscherpte zijn tekstuele kritiek op de koloniale structuren die nog steeds het dagelijks leven in België doordringen. Op zijn aankomende album stapt Ahamad uit de vervorming en verkent hij het volledige bereik van zijn stem. Good Effort! is een ode aan de moderne stad en een strijdkreet tegen gentrificatie, en markeert opnieuw een muzikale wending naar jazz, een chimere combinatie van Kendrick uit het To Pimp A Butterfly-tijdperk, Flying Lotus en Slauson Malone. Als er één ding consistent is aan Youniss, dan is het wel zijn talent om verwachtingen te doorbreken op een manier die het veld van sonische mogelijkheden vergroot.

L'artiste multidisciplinaire Youniss Ahamad, basé à Anvers, fonctionne un peu comme une particule quantique, résistant constamment à toute catégorisation et à toute connaissance. Ses performances live lors de festivals tels que Rewire, Roadburn et Les Nuits Botanique lui ont valu une notoriété en tant que provocateur musical mêlant post-punk, hip-hop et noise. Le parcours unique d'Ahamad dans la scène underground belge a été influencé par ses racines ancestrales en Côte d'Ivoire et en Irak. Son expérience de jeune Noir portant un nom arabe, qui a grandi dans la banlieue d'Anvers, a inspiré White Space, sorti en 2023, marquant un passage d'une musique dance cérébrale à une narration expérimentale et déformée.

Chaque album suivant a vu Ahamad changer de son. Cependant, la tendance générale s'est orientée vers des performances plus vivantes et viscérales : White Space était une explosion de guitare électrique, de voix fulgurantes et de breakbeats acérés. L'EP 2024 Do We Try Beyond The Edge? a poursuivi dans cette veine, affinant ses paroles acerbes contre les structures coloniales qui imprègnent encore la vie quotidienne en Belgique. Sur son prochain album, Ahamad sort de derrière la distorsion et explore toute la gamme de sa voix. Ode à la ville moderne et appel à la lutte contre la gentrification, Good Effort! marque un nouveau tournant musical vers le jazz, une combinaison chimérique entre Kendrick à l'époque de To Pimp A Butterfly, Flying Lotus et Slauson Malone. S'il y a une chose qui caractérise Youniss, c'est son talent pour briser les attentes d'une manière qui élargit le champ des possibilités sonores.

His live performances at festivals like Rewire, Roadburn and Les Nuits Botanique have gained him notoriety as a musical firebrand mixing post-punk, hiphop, and noise. Ahamad’s unique path in the Belgian underground has been influenced by his ancestral roots in Cote D’Ivoire and Iraq. His experience growing up in the Antwerp suburbs as a Black person with an Arabic name inspired 2023’s White Space – marking a shift from cerebral dance music to distorted, experimental storytelling.
