Never change a winning team. Het lag voor de hand dat Triggerfinger voor de opvolger van ‘All this Dancin’ Around’ (2010) opnieuw twee maand naar Los Angeles zou trekken om er in te checken in hun geliefkoosde Hollywood Downtowner Motel en andermaal op te nemen met producer Greg Gordon, intussen zo’n beetje het ‘vierde Triggerfinger-lid’. Eén verschil: plaats van de misdaad was niet de Sound City Studio zoals vorige keer (de ‘Nevermind’-studio werd intussen opgedoekt) maar de al even legendarische Sunset Sound studio op Sunset Boulevard (o.a. Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones).

Niemand kon voorspellen wat Triggerfinger te wachten stond toen ze begin 2012 bij Giel Beelen à l’improviste die cover opnam van Lykke Li’s ‘I Follow Rivers’. De kopjes-en-mes-cover ging viral, werd een radiohit en haalde nummer één in België en Nederland. In de slipstream van dat onverwachte succes trok Triggerfinger opnieuw op tournee (Duitsland, Zwitserland, Frankrijk, Oostenrijk en Oost-Europa) om veel later dan voorzien (tussendoor was er nog de soundtrack voor ‘Offline’ en de live-plaat ‘Faders Up 2 – Live in Amsterdam’) aan de nieuwe plaat te beginnen. ‘Er zit koorts in de plaat,’ vat Monsieur Paul het treffend samen.

Songs, sexiness, seventies, blues, glam, wiegende heupen, handclaps, grofkorrelige ruis en grooves die genadeloos op het middenrif mikken: ‘By Absence of the Sun’ is een plaat die de grootste Belgische rockgroep van dit moment nog maar eens een niveau hoger tilt. De plaat is de hoogdringende neerslag van maanden waarin Ruben Block, Monsieur Paul en Mario Goossens ongekende climaxen beleefden, maar ook werden geconfronteerd met allerlei keerzijdes. Ruben Block: ‘Camions vol goeie vibes hebben we over ons heen gehad: waanzinnige festivals gedaan. Stadions in Duitsland. Maar tegelijkertijd gebeurden er in mijn familie thuis heftige dingen, dierbaren werden ziek. Wat moest ik met al die tegenstrijdigheid? Ik ben vaak bij Greg Gordon ten rade gegaan: dat de plaat één energiek geheel werd, is zijn verdienste. Want er zat evengoed een melancholische plaat in mij.’

Schaamteloos sexy jukeboxsongs als ‘Perfect Match’ en ‘Black Panic’ slalommen rond twijfelende, maar altijd hoopvolle nummers als ‘Splendor in the Grass’, ‘Halfway There’, ‘Trail of Love’ en de titelsong. Dat ‘By Absence of the Sun’ als song- en albumtitel in de plaat is geslopen, is ook de verdienste van Greg Gordon. Ruben: ‘Greg vond dat een mooie zin in mijn notitieschrift. Er gebeurt veel na zonsondergang - veel spannende dingen (lacht). En als je echt niet kan zonder de zon: niks houdt je tegen om die te gaan opzoeken hè.’

Nog tegenstrijdigheden die ‘By Absence of the Sun’ bepaalden: rond de studio in Hollywood was er die voelbare kloof tussen arm en rijk, op tournee was er altijd die clash tussen de adrenalinerush van de live-shows en de ontheemdheid van het leven on the road. Mario Goossens: ‘De ene dag sta je in een bloedhete tent op het Sziget-festival te spelen – onze geluidsman mat minstens 51 ° Celsius – de volgende dag kom je thuis bij je geliefden die op een heel ander ritme leven.’ En vergeet de drie erg verschillende persoonlijkheden binnen de groep niet: Monsieur Paul de grote mond, Mario de diplomaat, Ruben de bemiddelaar.

Over de muziek op ‘By Absence of the Sun’ zijn de drie het wél eens. Ruben Block voelt veel ZZ Top in z’n riffs, Mario Goossens vindt de sfeer van de plaat heel Roxy Music, Monsieur Paul hoort echo’s van de tongue in cheek chique van Robert Palmer. Allemaal heren in maatpak, geen toeval. Monsieur Paul: ‘Triggerfinger is: een camionette openen vol versterkers en kabels en instrumenten, met daartussen een rij kostuums. Kostuums, maar wel met flinke zweetplekken.’ Een bezweet maatpak, het is de ultieme tegenstrijdigheid die ‘By Absence of the Sun’ vat.

Depuis leur 1er opus en 2004 le trio s’est forgé une réputation live impressionnante, avec des concerts d’anthologie au Main Square, au Werchter ou aux Vieilles Charrues. Le groupe connait déjà un succès fulgurant en Belgique, en Hollande et en Allemagne (single "I Follow Rivers" Or en Allemagne et Double Platine en Belgique & en Hollande). Du Rock sexy, un vrai concentré de puissance...!
Le groupe formé en 1998 à Anvers (Belgique) sort son premier opus en 2004 : Triggerfinger, album combinant Pop, Rock et Blues avec subtilité.

En 2008 sort l’album What Grabs Ya?, A cette occasion le groupe enchaine les dates et les festivals européens (Pinkpop, Dour, Pukelpop, Lowlands, Rock Werchter, Les nuits secrètes, Les nuits de l’Alligator...).

En 2010, le rythme s’accélère, Triggerfinger se rapproche du producteur Greg Gordon (Oasis, Slayer, Soulwax...) et investit le Sound City Studio de Los Angeles, pour enregistrer son troisième album : All this Dancin’ around, aujourd’hui double platine.

En décembre 2010 pour la sortie de ce dernier opus, le groupe affiche "sold out" trois soirs de suite à l’Ancienne Belgique et réitère l’expérience un peu plus tard au Paradiso (Amsterdam). Ils enchaînent avec les plus belles scènes européennes, dont en France le Rock Dans Tous ses Etats et le Main Square Festival.

En 2011, aux Industry Music Awards, Triggerfinger est sacré Meilleur Groupe de l’année et Mario Goosens se voit remettre le prix du Meilleur Musicien.

Début 2012, le groupe rejoint pour la France VERYCORDS et VERYSHOW Productions.

A l’occasion d’un live sur la radio Hollandaise 3FM, TRIGGERFINGER reprend le tube "I Follow Rivers" de Lykke Li et c’est le buzz !! La vidéo affiche rapidement plus de 9 millions de vues sur Youtube ! Le single est ensuite certifié Or en Allemagne et Double Platine en Hollande et en Belgique.
En milieu d’année le groupe sort son second album live, Faders Up 2 et embarque pour une tournée des plus grands festivals européens : Rock Im Park, Rock Am Ring, Rock-A-Field, Azkena Rock, Getaway Festival, Solidays, Vieilles Charrues, Love Parade de Solidarité Sida... Ils ont également ouvert pour les Red Hot Chili Peppers à Nijmegen (Nl) le 28 juin !

Après une tournée des clubs français à l’automne achevée par un Nouveau Casino (Paris) complet, ils sont programmés au Festival OÜI FM Bring The Noise au Divan du Monde (Paris).
TRIGGERFINGER clôture 2012 par un véritable sacre aux MIA avec 4 Awards : Best Live Act, Best Alternative, Best Band, Single of the Year.

Triggerfinger – ‘By Absence of the Sun’

Never change a winning team. It was only natural that, for the follow up to 2010’s ‘All this Dancin’ Around’, Triggerfinger would board a plane to Los Angeles to check in in their beloved Hollywood Downtowner Motel and once again work with producer Greg Gordon, aka ‘the fourth Triggerfinger member’. One little difference: scene of the crime this time around was not the Sound City Studio (the ‘Nevermind’ studio has been closed down recently) but the equally iconic Sunset Sound studio on Sunset Boulevard (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones…)

No one could predict the snowball effect of the impromptu acoustic cover of Lykke Li’s ‘I Follow Rivers’ that Triggerfinger played on Dutch 3FM-radio dj Giel Beelen’s breakfast show in early 2012. The cover, with its subtle knife-and-teacup percussion, went viral, became a radio hit and even reached the number one spot in the Belgian and Dutch charts. In the slipstream of that surprise success, Triggerfinger embarked on yet another European tour (Germany, Switzerland, France, Austria and Eastern Europe). They also recorded the soundtrack for the movie ‘Offline’ and released the live album ‘Faders Up 2 – Live in Amsterdam’ that same year. Or: it was much later than planned, that Triggerfinger could finally start working on a new album. ‘There’s a fever running through the record,’ as bass player Monsieur Paul accurately points out.

Songs, sexiness, seventies, glam, blues, shaking hips, handclaps, gritty noise and grooves that aim directly at the midriff: ‘By Absence of the Sun’ is an album that lifts the biggest Belgian guitar band of the moment to yet another level. The record takes the temperature of a period in time in which Ruben Block (guitar, vocals), Monsieur Paul (bass) and Mario Goossens (drums) experienced incredible thrills, but also tasted bitter aftermaths. Ruben Block: ‘Truckloads of good vibes were poured over us. Crazy festivals. Stadium shows in Germany. But simultaneously, my family back home was hit by misfortune. People I love very much got very ill… I was struggling with all these contradictory emotions. I often turned to Greg Gordon: ‘What do you think of these lyrics?’ That the record is so vivid and full of energy, is greatly due to Greg. I could easily have written a dark melancholy album.’

Sexy jukebox as ‘Perfect Match’ and ‘Black Panic’ are charged with pure electricity, whereas more intimate songs as ‘Splendor In The Grass’, ‘Halfway There’, ‘Trail of Love’ and the title song express a sense of loss. However, these melancholy moments too are carried by the romance of hope. ‘By Absence of the Sun’ wouldn’t have made it as a song and album title, if it wasn’t for Greg Gordon. Ruben: ‘Greg thought that was a beautiful phrase in my notebook. He was right. A lot happens after sunset - a lot of fun things (grins). But if one really needs the light, really misses sunlight - no one stops you from looking for the sun, right?’

‘By Absence of the Sun’ is an album that was born out of various contradictions. There was that awful gap between poor and rich on the streets of Hollywood the band witnessed when recording in Sunset Sound. On tour, each member felt both the adrenaline-fuelled euphoria of the live shows and the homesickness and loneliness that come with life on the road. Mario Goossens: ‘One day you’re playing in a crazily hot tent on the Sziget festival – our sound guy read 51 degrees Celsius on his cell phone! – the next day you’re back home, trying to adjust to the slow domestic tempo of your beloved ones.’ And do not forget the personality clash that is Triggerfinger: Monsieur ‘Big Mouth’ Paul, Mario the diplomat and Ruben the mediator.

There’s one issue the three easily agree on: how ‘By Absence of the Sun’ sounds. Ruben Block feels a lot of ZZ Top in his riffs, Mario Goossens thinks the atmosphere of the record is very Roxy Music, Monsieur Paul hears echoes of Robert Palmer’s ‘tongue in cheek chic’. All sartorially savvy gentlemen, always wearing a well-cut suit. Hardly a coincidence. Monsieur Paul: ‘Triggerfinger is: opening our van and finding a row of suits between the mess of cables, guitars and amps. Fine gentlemen’s suits, but covered with dirty, smelly sweat stains.’ A sweaty tailor-made suit: it’s the ultimate contradiction defining ‘By Absence of the Sun’.
